This year’s OGA was officiated by Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia on the first day of the show, who later went on to tour the exhibition halls. “If 2016 was the ‘year of tough decisions’ for the Oil and Gas industry, then 2017 could be the road to recovery.” he remarks. Zahid said one of Malaysia’s key aspirations is to grow the oil field services industry, in line with the government’s vision to catapult Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020. The government of Malaysia has issued various policies and incentives to spearhead the growth of the O&G industry, such as reduction of taxes for companies involved in marginal field development, opening up access to LNG imports and the launch of the Global Incentives for Trading (GIFT), to encourage more global companies involved in the trading of petroleum to establish their presence in Malaysia. “Despite the tumultuous period of the past couple of years, the industry remains incredibly resilient.” He said.

In this climate, there are plenty of opportunities for Oil and Gas players to explore. This is the best time for players to diversify into related product or service offerings and add new market segment, including exploring new areas in downstream. There has been a shift in the mindset among Oil and Gas players who are leaning towards shorter-cycle projects to lower their risk.P1140311 P1140324

By 2020, Malaysia envisions the Oil, Gas and Energy (OGE) sector to generate US$40 billion in incremental income. To achieve this, all avenues and opportunities within the sector should be operating at maximum capacity.
